October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and October 15 is the specific day on which babies who have been lost to miscarriage, stillbirth and sudden infant death are recognized across the globe with an International Wave of Light. Since 2010, we have held two events to raise awareness during this month - a walk and a candlelight vigil. The walk provides an opportunity to raise awareness out in the community by having a presence in the downtowns of Biddeford and Saco. It also generates funds for First Candle, an organization focused on research, education and bereavement resources. The candlelight vigil is now done in conjunction with Maine Medical Center, and it provides a space where grieving families and friends can gather to remember babies lost and share stories.
